Billie R. ‘Knappy’ Knappenberger, 96, of Worthington, formerly of Slate Lick, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at Meadow Lake Manor Personal Care Home. He was born Nov. 11, 1920, in West Franklin Township to the late Joseph E. and Ella J. (Edwards) Knappenberger. Billie was a truck driver, retiring in 1981 from Penn Dixie Cement. He was a member of the local teamsters union. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, cutting grass on his John Deere tractor, and hauling limestone. For many years he brought peaches and apples from Chambersburg. He will be fondly remembered by many for his ‘words of wisdom.’ Survivors include one son, Richard (Melinda) Knappenberger of Worthington; one daughter, Jane (William) Anthony of Kittanning; one grandson, Jared Anthony; two granddaughters, Morgan (Robert) Galonski and Keely Anthony; one great-grandson, Isaac Galonski; one sister, Beatrice Shearer of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty J. (Yockey) Knappenberger; three brothers, Norwood W. Knappenberger, Percy E. Knappenberger, and Arnold C. Knappenberger; and three sisters, Vera Z. Wheat, Retha M. Grafton, and Freda A. Ruffaner. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home, 119 Bear St., Worthington. Additional viewing will be held from 10 a.m. Friday until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be at Lawn Haven Burial Estates. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Billie’s memory to Freeport Meals on Wheels.
