Paul Wesley Shaner

Paul Wesley Shaner, 86, of Kittanning, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, at the ACMH Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1930, in Kittanning to the late Robert Paul Shaner and Alberta Mae (Starr) Shaner-Craft. He was the step-son of Byron Robert Craft who raised him from an early age.

Paul married R. Joyce (Jack) Starr at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Kittanning on May 17, 1952, and they just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Through the years Paul had worked at Eljer Pottery, Hads Refractory, Kittanning Post Office, PPG in Ford City, and Kittanning Borough, from which he retired.

He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Paul was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kittanning.

Paul was a member of Kittanning Hose Co. No. 6 Fire Department for 58 years, where he was a truck driver and mechanic. He also was one of the initial founders of Hose Co. No. 6 Ambulance Service. Prior to that, he also was a member of South Buffalo Township Fire Department. He was a past president of the Western Pennsylvania Fireman’s Association, he has attended both Pennsylvania and Western Pennsylvania Fireman’s Conventions since 1970; he was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Fireman’s Association, and the Old Timers and Past President Association, Hi-Hatters Association, Turtle Club, Kittanning-East Brady Masons Lodge No. 244, Coudersport Consistory, and the Dairy Queen Bowling Team at King Lanes.

Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing horse shoes, and cards, and watching his grandchildren play sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, R. Joyce (Jack) Shaner; son, Paul Wesley Shaner of Lancaster; daughter, Kimberly Sue (Edward) Carlisle of Lower Burrell; grandson, Shawn (Sara) Shaner of Adrian; grandson, Samuel (Shannon) Shaner of East Petersburg, Pa.; grandson, Paul Wesley Shaner III of New Providence, Pa.; granddaughter, Nicolette Sue (Joe) Altemara of Monessen; great-grandsons, Shawn Paul Shaner Jr., Jacob Robert Shaner, and Joshua Gabriel Shaner, all of Adrian, and Brayden Anthony Shaner of East Petersburg; great-granddaughters, Jade Harley Marie Eckenrod of Pennsylvania, and Emma Marie and Rhea Grace Shaner of East Petersburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, 200 S. McKean St., Kittanning. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, where there will be additional visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service with the Rev. Edward Walters officiating. Interment will be in the McVille Cemetery.
