Miriam Laird Walter, 99, of Kittanning, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, died Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Premier Armstrong Rehabilitation & Nursing Facility. She was born to William Lyon Laird and Charity Jane Dickey Laird in Sugarcreek Township on August 15, 1919. Miriam graduated from Kittanning High School in 1938, and then attended West Penn School of Nursing prior to attending Grace Martin Business School. She moved to Detroit, Michigan to work for Davis Smith Medical Dental Agency as a secretary. She married her husband, Rutherford (Rudy) A. Walter of South Bend, IN in 1956. She then moved to South Bend, Indiana, where they lived for 49 years. There, Miriam was active in The Questers organization, the YWCA Antique Study Group and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in South Bend, where she was still a member to this day. She served as State President of The Indiana Questers and held numerous offices within her chapter. She had a curious mind and a love of learning. She researched and authored three papers for the Quester Founders Award and won First PLACE on each paper. She also won recognition on other papers she wrote. She loved antiquing and was instrumental in organizing chapters in Pennsylvania. Miriam moved back to Kittanning in 2006 and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Kittanning.
She is survived by her nieces, Shirley Stennett and Mary Lee Schaub. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Roma Schaub; her niece, Jean Cooper; nephew, Thomas Lee Schaub; and her great-nephew. Alan Cooper.
Friends will be received on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, 200 S. McKean St., Kittanning from 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m., with Rev. Mark Brady officiating.
