Karen Gail (Rearick) Shaffer, 67, of Worthington, Pa, passed away the morning of May 25th, 2023 at her home. She was born on the 22nd of January, 1956 in Kittanning, Pa to the late Eleanor (Rearick) Bowser. Karen was a graduate of Worthington High School, class of 1973, and attended Duff’s Business Institute for a degree in fashion. After graduation, she began her career at Brody’s Department Store in Kittanning and continued at the Worthington Pharmacy. Karen’s true passion was affectionately caring for children and she spent the next 23 years working for the Evangelical Lutheran Nursery School in Worthington as a teacher and retired as the school’s treasurer. She was also a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and recently volunteered as a poll worker. Karen spent her retirement loving her grandchildren, family and extended family. She was an avid watcher of all Pittsburgh sports, a fan of Jeff Gordon and loved cultivating flowers in her garden.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Dennis Shaffer, of Worthington; son, Grant Shaffer and wife, Dawn Breski, of Warrenton, Va.; daughter, Courtney (Shaffer) Ulanowicz and husband, Michael, of Moon Township, Pa; grandchildren, Victoria, Avery and Gavin Shaffer; brother, Donald Bowser and his wife, April Bowser; brother, Delbert Bowser, of New York; sisters, Melissa Bowser, of San Francisco and Michelle Bowser, of North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Linda Shaffer, of Worthington and Theresa McChesney Bowser, of Erie, Pa. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor; brother, Gerald Bowser; aunt, Janet Earl, whom she regarded as a second mother; and Frances and Carl Wolff, whom helped guide her.
Friends will be received on Sunday, May 28, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home, 119 Bear St., Worthington, PA. Additional visitation will be held on Monday, May 29, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 134 W. Main St., Worthington, PA from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Sue Irons officiating. Interment will be in Lawn Haven Burial Estates in Worthington, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Karen’s memory to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Worthington, PA.
