Mary Ann (Ellenberger) Shaffer, 96, of Dayton, Pa. passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at Back to Basics Personal Care Home. Born March 2, 1929 in Boggs Township, she was the daughter of the late Worthington and Laura Ellenberger. She formerly worked as Kittanning Borough Secretary. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in New Bethlehem and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mary Ann enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband, Jack, and taking Sunday drives looking for wildlife and viewing the countryside. She enjoyed her time as an avid hunter. She and her husband owned Shaffer's Market in Distant, Pa. for over 50 years. Mary Ann was known for her skills of baking and bird watching. She treasured spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary Ann spent her last few years coloring and enjoying the simple things in life.
She leaves behind to forever cherish her memory, her sons, Thomas Shaffer and wife, Lois (Guthrie), of Dayton, Pa. and Jeffrey Shaffer and wife, Pamela (Serene), of Kittanning, Pa.; her daughters, Nancy Starr and husband, William, of Elizabeth, Pa. and Connie Brosius and husband, Simon, of Summerville, Pa; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Jack B. Shaffer; and 2 brothers, 4 sisters and 1 great-granddaughter.
The family would like to thank Back to Basics Personal Care Home and Lutheran Senior Life VNA, Home Health and Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, 200 S. McKean St., Kittanning, Pa. Additional visitation will be held on Friday, May 2, at New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 403 Penn St., New Bethlehem, PA 16242 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m., with her son-in-law, Pastor Bill Starr officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Distant, Pa.
