Mary Louise ‘Weezie” (Germy) Starr was born in Ford City, PA on April 14, 1932, to Virginia and Arthur Germy. She was their youngest daughter and the baby sister to Joseph, Virginia (Honeybunch), Lorraine, Aurthur Gene and Edward. She married her love Arnold “Arnie” Starr on February 15, 1955, in West Virginia. Their home was in Kittanning, PA. where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Together they explored the West on many long and adventurous trips, some of which included gambling in scenic locations. They took in sights and sent postcards to their loved ones. For many years Weezie worked at the A&P Grocery Store and retired happily. Arnie worked at Eljer Pottery and was a lifetime member of Kittanning Hose Company 6 and VFW. Weezie was an amazing baker and loved to cook. She nurtured a bountiful garden; both produce and flowers. She always shared her homemade and homegrown treats with her family, friends and community members. Weezie lovingly provided care for Arnie until his death in 2003. She loved spending time with all of her and was an extremely generous and loving Aunt and ‘second mother’ to her nieces, nephews and chosen family.
Weezie always saw the best in everyone. She had a heart of gold, so much love and kindness and a laugh that will remain in our hearts! She loved to remind us that she was as strong as a “Belgian Work Horse”. Her smile, sparkling green eyes and laughter were the best! She gave loving hugs, enveloping and warm squeezes and legendary reflexology foot treatments.
Weezie loved cats! Over the years, many cats were privileged to live in her house. She also cared for hundreds of ‘outside cats’, or strays, by ensuring that they had food and water on her back porch every morning and evening. She loved to watch and feed the birds and always enjoyed the view from both the front and back porches. Weezie’s love for animals manifested in many ways including donating materials, food and her time to Orphans of the Storm of Armstrong County.
Being born a Germy meant that Weezie loved to play cards; mostly Pinocle and Five Hundred. On occasion, she was known to make subtle alterations to the rules. Solitaire was a favorite and she would include friends for double and triple solitaire, Uno, Phase 10 or jigsaw puzzles. She loved reading the paper, completing word searches and watching Perry Mason on the television. She was a talented quilter and enjoyed knitting. Many loved family and friends received her personalized handwork creations. She also loved good food, Kennywood and to go new places.
Weezie was an active member of the congregation at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she shared her love of people and God. In 2022, a surprise 90th birthday party was hosted for her during which Weezie received recognition from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for contributing to the enrichment of others and demonstrating the highest ideals of citizenship. The final chapter of Weezie’s rich life ended on July 17, 2025, at the age of 93. Her strength was admirable even as her mind and body grew tired. Fortunately, family and friends were by her side to provide care and keep her comfortable. In Weezie’s honor, make time for the people that are important to you, make sure they know how special they are and share tons of laughter.
