Sylvia Sue Hooks

Sylvia Sue Hooks, 71, of Manorville, died on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 in ACMH Hospital. She was born on March 9, 1950 in Kittanning to the late John Y. & Colleen Hooks.  Sylvia was a devoted member of the Grace Baptist Church in Kittanning.  She taught 2nd grade at Dayton Elementary from 1977-2007, retiring after 30 years. She was known for “Sylvia’s Pottery”, and was a skilled potter.  Locally she has done the Folk Festival for over 30 years.  Sylvia was quiet but had a great sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to try new things.  She enjoyed traveling, planned great trips and new adventures.  She once traveled coast to coast with her mom.  She loved children and taught many; including the true meaning of Christmas, making clay nativity sets.  She was a wonderful photographer who used to develop her own pictures.  She was very private, a person who worked behind the scenes.  She loved God and her family.  She loved her friends and those it was hard for others to love. 

Sylvia leaves behind to cherish her memory her brother, Aaron (Terrill) Hooks, of Warsaw, IN; sister-in-law, Melody Hooks, of Kittanning, PA; nieces, Myra, of Chicago, IL, Madeline, of Bolivar, MO, Mallory, of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Morgan, of Warsaw, IN; nephews, John Y. (Bre) Hooks and children, Bently and John Y. Hooks IV, of New Brighton & Nathanael (Emily) Hooks and daughter Scarlett, of Butler, PA; and adopted sister, Sonnie Olinger of Kittanning, PA.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sharon Hooks; brother, John Y. Hooks II; and great nephew, Jaxson Hooks. 

Family and friends of Sylvia Hooks will be received on Sunday, October 24, 2021 in the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, 200 South McKean Street, Kittanning, Pa 16201 from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Additional viewing will be held in the funeral home on Monday, October 25, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Nathan Bramlet & Dan Kaminski officiating.  Interment will follow in Kittanning Cemetery.  Family suggests that any memorial contributions in Sylvia’s name be made to the Grace Baptist Church in Kittanning.
